Nine Worthies

The Nine Worthies were and are a list of exemplars of medieval chivalry. In medieval times, the Worthies were understood to represent chivalric virtue. Citation of the Worthies was recognized by medieval people within the context of example and invocation of chivalric characteristics and behaviours.

There were lists of Nine Worthy Women during medieval period also. These lists were more variable than the list of the (all-male) Nine Worthies.

During the reign of Edouard IV and Domhnail as King and Queen of Ealdormere, it was decided to create a list of Worthies from the past and present of the Royal Citie. After brief consultation it became apparent that, thanks to Eoforwic's leading role in the life of both Septentria and Ealdormere, the exercise of listing Worthies revealed an embarrassment of riches. Indeed, more experienced Eoforings were able to come up with a shining list of Worthies; sadly, none of these were active in the Society any longer.

Accordingly, lists were created to mirror the structure of the medieval list of Worthies. Parallel to Ancient or Pagan Worthies, Biblical Worthies and Moidern or Christian Worthies, lists were created of Worthies of Eoforwic from the earliest days, from middle years and, most importantly when the role of exemplar to active Eoforings is considered, the recent past and present. Even with two lists (Lord and Ladies), there still were many wonderful, worthy people left off the lists. However, these two sets of Worthies embody the virtues that have allowed Eoforwic to flourish and its Barony and Kingdom to grow.
